UConn faculty and medical residents also elected to join A\u03a9A were honored.<\/p>\n<p>As the 130th\u00a0active chapter,\u00a0UConn joins medical schools\u00a0throughout the U.S. in the society recognizing and promoting the highest ideals of\u00a0medicine. Member election to A\u03a9A chapter is an honor that signifies excellence and commitment to scholarship, leadership, professionalism, and service.<\/p>\n<p>The roots of UConn\u2019s new Connecticut Beta chapter was first established in 2016. It is only the second chapter to be established in the state since\u00a0Yale School of Medicine\u2019s Alpha chapter was founded in 1920.<\/p>\n<p>As an active A\u03a9A chapter, each year UConn School of Medicine can nominate\u00a0the top 25 percent of its medical school class to become members of the\u00a0professional medical organization within their senior year. Laurencin<\/a>, University Professor at UConn, the Albert and Wilda Van Dusen Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at UConn School of Medicine, and director of the Institute for Regenerative Engineering and The Raymond and Beverly Sackler Center for Biomedical, Biological, Physical, and Engineering Sciences at UConn Health<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Zalneraitis-Edwin\"> Edwin L. Zalneraitis,<\/a> professor of pediatrics and neurology and director of the pediatric residency program at UConn School of Medicine and Connecticut Children\u2019s Medical Center<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Alpha Omega Alpha was founded in 1902 by a small group of\u00a0medical students led by William Webster Root at the College of Physicians\u00a0and\u00a0Surgeons in Chicago. Its premier membership has included 57 Nobel Laureates, 11\u00a0Surgeons General of the U.S. and nearly\u00a0seventy-five percent of deans\u00a0of U.S. medical schools.
