{"id":10628,"date":"2018-08-20T11:23:37","date_gmt":"2018-08-20T15:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cicats.uconn.edu\/?p=10628"},"modified":"2020-06-26T11:13:03","modified_gmt":"2020-06-26T15:13:03","slug":"cicats-build-scholars-present-final-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/regenerative-engineering-institute\/2018\/08\/20\/cicats-build-scholars-present-final-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"CICATS BUILD Scholars Present Final Projects"},"content":{"rendered":" Pictured: CICATS 2018 BUILD Scholars with CICATS CEO Dr. Cato Laurencin\n<p>The Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) Initiative provides awards to undergraduate institutions across the country to implement and study innovative approaches to engaging and retaining students from diverse backgrounds in biomedical research.\u00a0 In 2014, the National Institute of Health (NIH) granted 10 five-year\u00a0<a class=\"external broken_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nigms.nih.gov\/training\/dpc\/Pages\/build.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BUILD (Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity)<\/a>\u00a0awards.\u00a0 The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) was one of the 10 core institutions to receive the award which led to the formation of the Building\u00a0Infrastructure\u00a0Leading to\u00a0Diversity: Southwest\u00a0Consortium of\u00a0Health-Oriented Education\u00a0Leaders\u00a0and\u00a0Research\u00a0Scholars (BUILDing Scholars) program.\u00a0Under the UTEP BUILD award, there are 13 Research partners, with UConn being the only academic institution from the northeast.<\/p>\n<p>The third cohort of CICATS BUILD Scholars recently completed their summer research experiences.\u00a0In addition to their summer research project, the Scholars attended weekly CICATS Summer Seminar Series lectures on topics such as research ethics and translational research, received additional personalized mentorship by M1 Mentors, and had the opportunity to present a poster of their research at UConn Health.
