Program Experiences

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at UConn John Dempsey Hospital at UConn Health is customized to the individual resident each year, based on goals, interests, experiences, and postgraduate pursuits.

Residents are required to complete core experiences in:

  • Anticoagulation Clinic – [longitudinal]
  • Critical Care
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Internal Medicine
  • Investigational Drugs/Research – [concentrated]
  • Leadership and Personal Professional Development – [longitudinal]
  • Management/Administration – [block and longitudinal]
  • Medication Safety
  • Oncology
  • Primary Care, Adult – [longitudinal]
  • Scholarship in Pharmacy (Research) – [concentrated and longitudinal]

Residents will have the option to choose up to two (2) elective experiences, consisting of (not limited to):

  • Academia
  • Anticoagulation Clinic – [as block]
  • Correctional Managed Health Care (CMHC)
  • Informatics
  • Neonatal Intensive Care
  • Poison Control/Toxicology
  • Primary Care, Geriatric
  • Psychiatry (Inpatient)

Residents will have longitudinal experiences, including:

  • IRB-approved research project to be presented in part at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and completed for the Eastern States Conference
  • Leadership and Personal Professional Development (PPD) work/life balance and leadership development series
  • UConn School of Pharmacy teaching certificate

Staffing requirements:

  • At least every third weekend (8-hour shifts)
  • One evening per week (6-hour shift)
  • Two holidays (one major, one minor)
