We have developed a comprehensive training program that will expose fellows to all aspects of spinal care, including the operative and non-operative treatment of degenerative, deformity, neoplastic and traumatic conditions. Our graduates will be prepared to pursue careers in both academic and private practice settings and be well equipped to treat patients using both traditional and complex minimally invasive techniques. Trainees will work at both UConn Health, an academic medical center, and Hartford Hospital, a tertiary care Level I trauma center. Fellows will have dedicated research time to pursue clinical, biomechanical and\/or basic science projects under the supervision of our core Spine faculty. Weber, MD, PhD, FRCSC<\/a><\/h3>\n<h2>\n\t\tClinical Experience<br \/>\n\t<\/h2>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/musculoskeletal-institute\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/2019\/09\/Moss_operating_JGelineau_2370a_1056x648a.jpg\" alt=\"Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Isaac Moss uses the Mazor Robotics Renaissance Guidance System to perform spine surgery\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"648\" width=\"1056\" title=\"Moss_operating_JGelineau_2370a_1056x648a\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"><\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\tOutpatient Clinic<br \/>\n\t<\/h3>\n<p>Fellows will spend 1-2 days per week seeing patients in the&Acirc;&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/spine\/\">UConn Comprehensive Spine Center<\/a> evaluating patients with a full range of spinal pathology including degenerative, deformity, neoplastic and traumatic conditions. Our spine center is a collaborative environment, home to orthopaedic spine surgeons, neurosurgeons, physiatrists, mid-level providers, and physical therapists. Fellows will have the opportunity to interact with the entire staff to gain an understanding for the full range of available treatments for our patients.<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\tOperating Room<br \/>\n\t<\/h3>\n<p>Fellows will spend 2-3 days per week in the operating room, at both UConn Health and Hartford Hospital. The surgical experience offered is unique in that fellows will be trained to address degenerative, deformity, neoplastic and traumatic conditions using both traditional open and minimally invasive techniques including MIS decompression and fusion, lateral interbody fusion and MIS coronal\/sagittal plane deformity correction. Operating rooms at both UConn Health and Hartford Hospital are state-of-the-art, and are equipped with integrated audiovisual systems, 3D imaging, and robotic navigation. Fellows will be given graduated responsibility at a pace commensurate with their background and skill. The fellow will also interact with the orthopaedic surgery residents, as well as play an active role in residency education.<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\tBioskills Laboratory<br \/>\n\t<\/h3>\n<p>The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery operates an onsite Bioskills Lab with a full complement of orthopaedic and spine instruments, radiolucent table, c-arm, simulators, and access to cadaveric specimens. At least 3 times per year, bioskills labs will be held with cadaveric specimens and implants focusing on specific procedures. In addition, the Lab is available to trainees 24\/7 with access to anatomical models and is available to evaluate new technology when the need arises.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tScholarly Activity<br \/>\n\t<\/h2>\n<h3>\n\t\tDidactic Teaching<br \/>\n\t<\/h3>\n<p>Weekly conferences will cover various spine related topics including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Indications for and interpretation of advanced spine imaging<\/li>\n<li>Indications and risk associated with various treatment options<\/li>\n<li>Surgical planning and technical pearls<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fellows will also attend monthly M&amp;M conferences, journal club and UConn Orthopaedic Forum\/Grand Rounds with invited speakers.<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\tResearch<br \/>\n\t<\/h3>\n<p>Fellows will have 1 half day per week of protected time to perform clinical\/laboratory research as per their preference.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tApplication Information<br \/>\n\t<\/h2>\n<p>Our fellowship program participates in the SF Matching Program.
