Orthopaedics deals with the cause, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of injuries that may occur to muscles, bones and joints, negatively impacting mobility. Muscles cross from bone to bone, spanning the joints. With the support of ligaments and tendons around the joint, contracting muscles pull the bones and produce a specific range of movement. When injury occurs to any one of these areas, all are affected.
Our specialists work together to provide patients with the most current treatments to help them regain mobility. From diagnosis to management to critical care, our specialists provide services for a broad range of orthopaedic problems, including foot and ankle surgery, hand and upper extremity surgery, arthroscopy, trauma and fracture repair, bone infection treatment, arthritis treatment, joint replacement surgery, and sports medicine.
Mobile joints between the skeletal bones make body movements possible. From neck and shoulder to foot and ankle, our orthopaedic specialists can provide you and your family with the very best of care.
When Your Care Includes a Hospital Stay
Many of our orthopaedic surgeons treat problems through same-day surgical procedures which are performed in the UConn Musculoskeletal Institute. However, some cases, such as joint replacement surgery, will require patients to spend time in UConn John Dempsey Hospital.
UConn Health has dedicated space on its fifth floor for patients who are hospitalized with orthopaedic conditions. The floor includes 28 private rooms and a specialized gym and rehab room so patients can start vital physical therapy soon after surgery. All of the staff, including the nurses, nurse practitioners, physical therapists and hospitalists, are highly trained in orthopaedic care. It’s the next best thing to being home!
