The focus group discussion provided rich input for the development of the risk communication strategy and workshop curriculum.<\/em><\/p>\n

Qualitative research<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Five focus groups were held between April 2014 and February 2015 in coastal locations in Connecticut.\u00a0Participants were from:\u00a0<\/span>1) public health and emergency response personnel;\u00a0<\/span>2) home owners, volunteers and local health officials;\u00a0<\/span>3) construction workers;\u00a04) faith organization workers; and\u00a0<\/span>5) coastal residents.<\/span><\/p>\n

The focus groups probed discussion under five areas:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Experience with hurricane response<\/li>\n
  2. Attitudes about personal safety and health<\/li>\n
  3. Interest and knowledge about mold and moisture<\/li>\n
  4. Experience with PPE\/Personal Protective Equipment<\/li>\n
  5. Information dissemination.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Themes that were discussed included:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Concern over the burden on those most vulnerable - whether workers or families<\/li>\n
    2. Information quality (much is available, but target groups\u2019 access and ability to evaluate is variable)<\/li>\n
    3. Distrust about illness severity, meteorological predictions, contractor practices, insurance, and government support<\/li>\n
    4. Reliance on many different ways to get information<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
