Authors: Colline Wong, Christopher Steele MD MPH

Introduction

Veterans may be eligible for VA health care benefits if they served in the active military, naval, or air service. The Veterans Health Administration (VA) is an integrated health care system  that provides medical care to 9 million Veterans across the U.S. The VA is a single-payer system with more than 1,200 hospitals, clinics and other facilities 1 that together address the diverse needs of the growing Veteran population. Additionally, there are health and mental health issues of importance in the Veteran population. The purpose of this module is to describe the Veterans Health Administration, discuss health disparities and inequities facing Veterans, and provide some resources to help mitigate these inequities.
