health care issues and prepare for health careers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> Attendees will:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><span>Participate in health professions activities in the medical, dental, and biomedical fields.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Learn about research conducted by UConn medical and dental students.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Gain insight into successful preparation for an application to professional schools.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Be provided an opportunity to interact with and seek advice from UConn faculty and medical, dental, graduate, and allied health student mentors.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>The Annual Bridge Conference is sponsored by the local chapters of the Student National Medical Association, Latino Medical Student Association, the Student dental, graduate, nursing and allied health students serve as mentors to college and high school students.<\/li>\n<li>Sponsored by the local chapters of the Student National Medical Association, the Student National Dental Association and the Department of Health Career Opportunity Programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Roles and Functions of a Mentor<\/h2>\n<p>To be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An advisor.<\/li>\n<li>A coach.<\/li>\n<li>A counselor.<\/li>\n<li>An experienced leader.<\/li>\n<li>An advocate.<\/li>\n<li>A patron.<\/li>\n<li>A role model.<\/li>\n<li>A guide.<\/li>\n<li>A sponsor.<\/li>\n<li>A support system.<\/li>\n<li>An objective critic.<\/li>\n<li>A confidante.<\/li>\n<li>A source of inspiration to the mentee.<\/li>\n<li>The individual who shows the mentee the ropes.<\/li>\n<li>There for the mentee.<\/li>\n<li>Helpful so that the mentee gets used to the particular professional culture.<\/li>\n<li>The sounding board that the mentee needs to express ideas.<\/li>\n<li>The support person to the mentee in setting appropriate goals and methods of assessing progress in relation to these goals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Advantages of Participating in a Mentoring Program<\/h2>\n<p>A mentor can help a learner:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Find useful resources.<\/li>\n<li>Set realistic targets.<\/li>\n<li>Plan for personal development.<\/li>\n<li>Become more
