Protected time is offered, for pursuit of elective experiences during the first year of training. Clinical rotations include both inpatient hematology/oncology consultation and outpatient office-based practice. Continuity clinic opportunities are available at each location, in which the fellows assume primary ownership of their patients, with direct attending supervision and support. Fellows frequently supervise and teach residents and medical students, particularly when rotating at the University Hospital.

Second and Third Year Curriculum

Fellows complete a total of 18 months in clinical rotations. The remaining 18 months offer an individualized track, depending on the fellow’s interest in research, scholarship, and education. The requirements for the latter half of the program include clinical or laboratory research and a Quality Improvement project. Continuity clinic is a longitudinal, outpatient experience that spans all three years of training.

Features

Cancer Immunotherapy Program

Clinical Trials Program

Comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment Program (federally-funded)

Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Program

Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Program

Multidisciplinary Melanoma Program

New England Sickle Cell Institute

Program Aims

Strong focus on excellence in clinical practice at three participating sites:

UConn Health

Hartford Hospital

Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center

Patient Support Services and Palliative Care experience.

Emphasis on the physician/patient relationship and communication skills.

Development of procedural skills including bone marrow aspirate and biopsy and administration of intrathecal chemotherapy.

First Year Curriculum The first year is primarily clinical and is distributed approximately evenly between inpatient and outpatient experiences at the three hospital sites.
