{"id":3842,"date":"2017-12-27T12:11:34","date_gmt":"2017-12-27T17:11:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/graduate-medical-education\/?page_id=3842"},"modified":"2026-04-16T10:23:51","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T14:23:51","slug":"eligibility-requirements-and-selection","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/graduate-medical-education\/eligibility-requirements-and-selection\/","title":{"rendered":"Eligibility Requirements and Selection"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-3842\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-3842-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-3842-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-3842-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div class=\"textwidget\"><p>The Graduate Medical Education office is part of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and is responsible for the quality of all sponsored residency and fellowship programs.<\/p>\n<h3>Eligibility Requirements<\/h3>\n<p>Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications in addition to program specific qualifications to be eligible for appointment to residency\/fellowship programs at The University of Connecticut School of Medicine:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the <a href=\"http:\/\/lcme.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)<\/a> and successful completion of any pre-requisite training specified by the appropriate accrediting body*.<\/li>\n<li>Graduates of osteopathic medicine schools in the United States accredited by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osteopathic.org\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Osteopathic Association (AOA)<\/a> and successful completion of any pre-requisite training specified by the appropriate accrediting body*.<\/li>\n<li>Graduates of dental medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ada.org\/en\/coda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who have or will have a valid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfmg.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Educational Commission of Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)<\/a> certificate and successful completion of any pre-requisite training specified by the appropriate accrediting body*.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*Accrediting bodies such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acgme.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abog.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG)<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ada.org\/en\/coda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Dental Association (ADA)<\/a> and the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.osteopathic.org\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> American Osteopathic Association (AOA)<\/a>. For unaccredited programs the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) sets pre-requisite training requirements.<\/p>\n<h3>Selection<\/h3>\n<p>Programs select a resident\/fellow from eligible applicants on the basis of resident\/fellow program-related criteria such as preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, personal qualities such as motivation and integrity, and other factors.
