{"id":37088,"date":"2025-11-10T12:56:30","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T17:56:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/graduate-medical-education\/?page_id=37088"},"modified":"2025-11-10T14:35:05","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T19:35:05","slug":"didactics-and-academic-expectations","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/graduate-medical-education\/anesthesiology-critical-care-medicine-fellowship\/didactics-and-academic-expectations\/","title":{"rendered":"Didactics and Academic Expectations"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><!--EndFragment --><\/h4>\n<p><!--StartFragment --><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Didactics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"pf0\"><span class=\"cf0\">Fellows participate in a structured, multidisciplinary educational program designed to strengthen core knowledge and advanced clinical reasoning in critical care medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"pf0\"><strong><span class=\"cf0\">Key Educational Components:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><span class=\"cf1\"><strong>ACCM Faculty Lecture Series:<\/strong> Weekly fellow-focused lectures covering critical care physiology, pathophysiology, and evidence-based management. Sessions are held in person at Hartford Hospital and streamed virtually to all affiliated sites.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><strong>DeckerMed<\/strong><span class=\"cf1\"><strong> Online Curriculum:<\/strong> Weekly question-based and reading modules from <em>Critical Care of the Surgical Patient<\/em> (<\/span><span class=\"cf1\">DeckerMed<\/span><span class=\"cf1\">). Fellows receive institutional access and are expected to complete assigned content.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><strong>Morbidity &amp; Mortality (M&amp;M) Conferences:<\/strong> Fellows attend and participate in unit-based and departmental M&amp;M discussions, leading at least one <em>Critical Care Case Discussion<\/em> during the fellowship year.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><strong>Unit-Based Teaching and Simulation:<\/strong> Fellows participate in daily teaching rounds, simulation-based sessions, and <span class=\"cf1\">Civetta<\/span><span class=\"cf1\"> Rounds that integrate real cases with literature review and multidisciplinary discussion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><strong>Grand Rounds:<\/strong> Fellows attend Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Trauma, and multidisciplinary Grand Rounds and are expected to present at least once per year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pf0\"><strong><span class=\"cf1\">Educational Resources:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"pf0\"><strong><span class=\"cf1\"><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"cf1\">Fellows receive foundational reference texts such as <em>Textbook of Critical Care<\/em> (Vincent et al.) and <em>The Ventilator Book<\/em> (Owens), along with access to question banks and board review tools including CHEST SEEK, SCCM Review Courses, and <\/span><span class=\"cf1\">DeckerMed<\/span><span class=\"cf1\"> modules.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><!--StartFragment --><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Academic Expectations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"pf0\"><span class=\"cf0\">Fellows are integral to the academic mission of the program and are expected to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><span class=\"cf1\">Attend all scheduled didactic and educational activities unless excused by the Program Director.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Lead at least two <em>Critical Care Case Discussion<\/em> and two <em>Fellow Lecture Series<\/em> topic.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Present two <em>Journal Club<\/em> articles annually.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Participate in one <em>Pro\/Con Debate<\/em> or panel discussion with a co-fellow.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Deliver two <em>mini-lectures (15 minutes each)<\/em> to residents or medical students during ICU rotations.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Complete at least one <em>Quality Improvement or Research Project<\/em> during fellowship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pf0\"><strong><span class=\"cf1\">Professional Engagement:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><span class=\"cf1\">Maintain current <strong>Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)<\/strong> certification throughout training.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Hold active <strong>membership in the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM)<\/strong> and the <strong>Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists (SOCCA)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Attend at least one national meeting annually\u2014such as the <strong>SCCM Critical Care Congress<\/strong> or <strong>SOCCA Annual Meeting<\/strong>\u2014to present research or engage in professional development.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Participate in <strong>in-training examinations<\/strong>, including the <em>ABA ITE\u2013Critical Care<\/em> and <em>SCCM MCCKAP<\/em>, as part of board preparation and self-assessment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--EndFragment --><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Didactics Fellows participate in a structured, multidisciplinary educational program designed to strengthen core knowledge and advanced clinical reasoning in critical care medicine.
