an 8<strong>67-bed tertiary referral center<\/strong> and one of New England\u2019s largest teaching hospitals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Receives <strong>9,000+ patient transfers annually<\/strong> from over 50 regional facilities.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Among the <strong>busiest surgical and transplant centers<\/strong> in the region.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Total of <strong>105<\/strong> ICU beds and 58 stepdown beds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--StartFragment --><\/p>\n<p class=\"pf0\"><strong><span class=\"cf0\">Trauma \/ Surgical ICU (C8I):<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><span class=\"cf0\"><strong>14-bed unit<\/strong> managing trauma and complex surgical patients (general, thoracic, vascular, transplant, and obstetric\/gynecologic).<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Fellows participate in <strong>multidisciplinary rounds, procedures, and 24-hour in-house calls<\/strong>, emphasizing comprehensive surgical critical care.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><strong>Anesthesiology and Surgery residents<\/strong>, as well as <strong>medical students<\/strong>, rotate through this unit, where fellows take an active role in teaching.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><strong>Anesthesia fellows train alongside Surgical Critical Care (SICU) fellows<\/strong>, promoting collaboration and integrated learning.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">The ICU team also leads <strong>RRT activations<\/strong> for deteriorating surgical inpatients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--StartFragment --><\/p>\n<p class=\"pf0\"><strong><span class=\"cf0\">Cardiothoracic Surgical ICU (B2N &amp; B3N):<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><span class=\"cf0\"><strong>18-bed combined unit<\/strong> for postoperative <strong>cardiac and thoracic surgery<\/strong> patients, including <strong>heart transplants and mechanical circulatory support<\/strong> (IABP, <\/span><span class=\"cf0\">Impella<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">, <\/span><span class=\"cf0\">ProtekDuo<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">, VAD, ECMO).<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Fellows gain advanced experience in <strong>hemodynamic monitoring, procedural skills, ECMO management, and perioperative cardiac critical care<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">The ICU team also responds to <strong>RRT activations<\/strong> for cardiothoracic surgical patients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--StartFragment --><\/p>\n<p class=\"pf0\"><strong><span class=\"cf0\">Coronary Care Unit (CCU <\/span><span class=\"cf1\">\u2013 B10I):<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><span class=\"cf1\"><strong>12-bed unit<\/strong> managing patients with <strong>acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, and malignant arrhythmias<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Fellows develop skills in <strong>cardiac hemodynamics, mechanical support, and ECMO<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><strong>Anesthesia fellows train alongside Cardiology fellows<\/strong>, encouraging cross-disciplinary education.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><strong>Internal Medicine residents<\/strong> and <strong>medical students<\/strong> rotate through this unit under fellows\u2019 supervision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--StartFragment --><\/p>\n<p class=\"pf0\"><strong><span class=\"cf0\">Neuro ICU (C9I &amp; B9I):<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><span class=\"cf0\"><strong>23-bed combined Neurocritical Care Unit<\/strong> caring for patients with <strong>stroke, TBI, spinal cord injury, status epilepticus, and post-neurosurgical conditions<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Fellows develop expertise in <strong>neurocritical physiology, intracranial pressure management, and neurologic prognostication<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pf0\"><strong><span class=\"cf0\">Medical ICU (B11I, B7I, B9I):<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><span class=\"cf0\"><strong>38-bed combined Medical Units<\/strong> caring for patients with various pulmonary and medical pathologies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Fellows rotate through this unit for electives only.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pf0\"><strong><span class=\"cf0\">Emergency Critical Care Unit (ECCU):<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><span class=\"cf0\">Located within the <strong>Emergency Department<\/strong> with over <strong>100,000 annual visits<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Provides exposure to <strong>advanced resuscitation<\/strong> and <strong>management of undifferentiated critical illness<\/strong> alongside emergency intensivists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><!--StartFragment --><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"pf0\"><strong><span class=\"cf0\">The Hospital of Central Connecticut (HOCC)<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><span class=\"cf0\"><strong>414-bed teaching hospital<\/strong> and <strong>Level III trauma center<\/strong> located in New Britain, CT.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\"><strong>HOCC ICU (24 beds):<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Mixed <strong>medical\u2013surgical\u2013neurocritical care unit<\/strong> staffed by dedicated intensivists and APPs.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Fellows manage a broad range of <strong>postoperative and trauma patients<\/strong> and perform procedures in a <strong>high-acuity environment<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">Offers valuable exposure to <strong>community-based critical care<\/strong> and <strong>independent clinical decision-making<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"pf0\">The ICU team also coordinates <strong>RRT activations<\/strong> for deteriorating inpatients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--EndFragment --><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment --><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment --><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment --><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment --><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment --><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UConn Health \u2013 John Dempsey Hospital 234-bed academic medical center located in Farmington, CT.
