educational time/conference.

All residents are allowed 3 weeks of vacation time per academic year. The vacation time is equally allocated to each rotation/site based on numbers of residents per site.

PGY1

The PGY1 schedule is designed to give first year residents a broad exposure to general surgery with experiences at all of our clinical sites. The educational focus for the year is on basic operative skills and pre/postoperative care.

PGY2

The PGY2 schedule allows the resident to expand their knowledge base of surgical disease and begin to develop more advanced surgical skills. During the PGY2 year there are additional SICU blocks with increased responsibility, a focused breast rotation, and a dedicated endoscopy rotation.

PGY3

Residents in the PGY3 year are given increased leadership responsibility on every service. Operative skills become a focus with increased time in the operating room at every site. During the PGY3 year residents rotate on transplant surgery and are the senior resident at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.

PGY4

On the majority of rotations the fourth year is the senior resident and runs the service. All call is at the chief level. Advanced laparoscopic skills are strengthened during the bariatric rotation. Opportunities to do advanced oncology cases, thoracic surgery, and vascular surgery are highlights.

PGY5

The final year of training allows residents to further develop advanced operative skills. There are many opportunities for the chief resident to take junior residents through cases. Leadership and communication skills are further enhanced.

PGY 1-2 Block 1 Block 2 Block 3 Block 4 Block 5 Block 6 Block 7 (7 weeks) Block 8 Block 9 Block 10 Block 11 Block 12 PGY 1 (4 week blocks) Trauma GS GS GS Plastics SICU Trauma/ACS GS GS GS GS […]
