VSLO usually opens for applications in Spring, Late March\/Early April.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">For questions about away rotations, you can contact Stephanie Swabski at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:swabski@uchc.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swabski@uchc.edu<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The emergency medicine visiting rotation allows students to rotate in our high volume, high acuity level 1 trauma center. During the first 3 days of the course, students are provided didactic sessions that include SIM, procedural skills, and approach to high-yield patient presentations. Students then spent time working with our residents and faculty in the Emergency Department. You will participate in resident didactics and have an opportunity to attend Journal Club. Resident didactics may be at Hartford Hospital, CESI (Center for Education, Simulation, and Innovation), or off-campus, depending on learning goals for the session.<\/p>\n<p>The following learning objectives are covered in this clerkship:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Treat a wide variety of acute outpatient problems.<\/li>\n<li>Rapidly diagnose and initiate treatment in patients with time-sensitive conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize and stabilize critically ill patients (resuscitation).<\/li>\n<li>Maintain care for more than one patient at a time (up to a student\u2019s own ability).<\/li>\n<li>Become acquainted with certain common emergency department procedures (suturing, splinting, and IV placement).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Residents as Mentors<\/h3>\n<p>The visiting student rotation is geared towards medical students interested in pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine. Our UConn Emergency Medicine residents have agreed to serve as mentors and will guide students through their time with us.
