I would like to help you understand why our program is special and why I hope that you will consider spending three of the most important years of your life with us. I believe that our strengths can be summarized in three points:

A dedication to the principle that residents and students learn best and thrive in a kind, supportive environment.

A group of first-rate clinical sites offering intensive but varied clinical experiences (including a free-standing dedicated pediatric hospital) within a seven mile radius of our primary clinical site.

World-class resources available to our residents including a total of 55,000 square feet of simulation space in two Emergency Medicine faculty-directed centers, a SonoGames and SonoSlam-winning ultrasound program, a three-aircraft aeromedical program, and participation in the Connecticut Poison Control Center.

Residency is more than the capstone of your clinical education as a physician it will be key in determining your strengths and weaknesses as a physician in independent practice. We offer an intensive, comprehensive clinical experience, with more than 160,000 patient visits per year between our primary clinical site at Hartford Hospital (a high acuity Level I trauma center at Hartford Hospital and the adjacent Connecticut Children's (a pediatric trauma center and the only free-standing children's hospital in Connecticut). In order to give our residents a sense of the breadth of the clinical practice Emergency Medicine we provide rotations in a variety of clinical sites including in Hartford, our suburban community site at UConn Health, and the urban community-based Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center Emergency Department in the north end of Hartford. Our yearly total clinical complement exceeding 280,000 ensures that you will be ready for any practice environment you choose upon graduation.

As an education-focused department, we have a vibrant, energetic faculty who are committed to supporting our residency and actively participate in our innovative weekly residency educational conferences. Our faculty have a wide variety of interests including medical simulation, emergency ultrasound, toxicology, management of the difficult airway, EMS, and critical care reflected in our faculty-led research program. The diversity of our faculty (including six ultrasound, six toxicology, two EMS and two critical care fellowship-trained physicians) is a key part of the strength of our clinical and didactic education educational program. We want to share our passions in EM with you and offer “mini-fellowship” tracks in point-of-care ultrasound, medical education, simulation, ED administration and EMS.

We pride ourselves on having a program which has a close knit, collegial atmosphere in which we all work together to further our goal to be the best emergency physicians possible. Our cohesive, team-based, supportive atmosphere helps make the challenges of residency manageable, rewarding and fun.

I hope that you will take this opportunity to learn more about our program and consider becoming a member of the UConn family.

Regards,
Shawn London, M.D., FACEP
Residency Director
UConn Integrated Residency in Emergency Medicine

Program Director Interview

University of Connecticut from EM Residents' Association (EMRA) on Vimeo.

Since its inception in 1993, UConn’s Integrated Residency in Emergency Medicine Program has graduated 340 residents who have gone on to successful careers in all aspects of emergency medicine.
