Resident conferences are all offered in person with virtual access.

Tuesday Afternoon Didactics

Tuesday afternoons from 12 to 3 p.m. are protected time for resident lectures. Residents are released from their rotations and there are no clinics scheduled. Lunch is provided to residents who attend in person.

Lecture series included in the Tuesday afternoons include:

  • Neuroanatomy
  • Basic neuroscience course (PGY3 and PGY4)
  • Subspecialty curriculum lectures
  • Ethics
  • Palliative care and communication skills
  • Quality and safety
  • Monthly lunch with program leadership
  • Monthly journal club
  • Monthly chairman’s rounds
  • Quarterly well-being afternoons (break from lectures to do something fun!)

Thursday Morning Department Lectures

7:30 a.m. Case Presentation
Case Conference occurs prior to Grand Rounds. A resident is assigned to present a case with a review of the relevant literature. Each PGY1 presents an outpatient clinic case during the year, and each PGY3 presents a Child Neurology case during their Child Neurology rotation. The rest of the cases are presented by PGY2s.

Thursday 8 a.m. Grand Rounds
Department Grand Rounds are held at Hartford Hospital with joint participation from UConn Health, Ayer Neuroscience Institute at Hartford HealthCare, and Connecticut Children’s faculty. At least one invited speakers present in this series as guest lecturers every month including the named Hartwell Thompson lecture given the morning after graduation ceremony. All PGY4 residents present a Neurohospitalist CPC over the course of the year. In June, senior residents and fellows present their scholarly projects as department Grand Rounds.

Continuity Clinic Didactics

Held at UConn Health in the Outpatient Clinic Conference room during regular clinic days one week a month. Residents will be responsible for reading an article and being prepared to discuss pertinent points during the didactics.

Mortality and Morbidity Conferences

Residents participate in monthly department M&M conferences at Hartford Hospital and at UConn Health.

Rotation Specific and Optional Didactics

Some lectures are attended by residents while on specific rotations as well as optionally.

Hartford Hospital inpatient and consult residents:

Morning Report: The ward and the consult senior residents select appropriate daily cases from the inpatient and consult services to present in detail for discussion and review of pertinent imaging with attendings on service and Dr. Pat Finelli, professor emeritus.

Neuro-Radiology: A Neuro-Radiology conference is held each Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Radiology department at which times, interesting imaging cases are discussed with an attending neuroradiologist.

Hartford HealthCare Headache Center Lectures

A Friday morning lecture series provided by Hartford HealthCare’s Headache Center which includes Journal Club and headache topics presented by Hartford HealthCare staff and invited guests. These are available to all residents virtually and strongly encouraged for residents rotating in Headache that week.

Movement Disorders Fellowship Series

A Friday noon lecture series provided by the UConn Health/Hartford HealthCare Fellowship. Lectures on Movement Disorders are presented by M.D. staff every Friday at noon. These are available to all residents virtually and strongly encouraged for residents rotating in Movement Disorders that week.

Hartford HealthCare Epilepsy Educational Series

Weekly refractory epilepsy/surgical planning conferences, journal clubs, EEG review conferences, and other lectures held every Wednesday These are available to all residents virtually and required only for residents rotating on EEG/Epilepsy rotation.

Hartford Hospital Neurohospitalist Series

A weekly virtual conference on Wednesdays at noon dedicated to various topics relevant to acute neurologic care, given by Hartford HealthCare attendings and invited speakers from various specialties.

Resident-organized Educational Sessions

Each year’s chief class can organize and present lectures for their fellow residents. These generally include board review for all residents each year. This year, there is an additional series, “Adams and Victor’s Book Club,” held on Tuesday evenings. Interested residents may tune in to discuss one chapter from “Adams and Victor’s Principles of Neurology.” Residents also organize a “Neuro Jeopardy” game as part of the board review series. These resident lectures are voluntary.
