Candidates for residency programs, especially international graduates, are often interested in having an experience in the medical education system in the U.S. before they begin residency/fellowship. Additionally, some programs want the opportunity of observing residents whose medical school education and skills may or may not fit the expectations of the program.
A candidate for residency who is still in medical school may apply for an elective as a visiting student through the Clinical Education Office of the UConn School of Medicine, 860-679-2246. A candidate who is seeking to change residency programs and who is in good standing in a U.S. residency program may also apply for an elective through the department sponsor of the residency program he/she is interested in.
Candidates for residency who are not in medical school and who are not currently in a U.S. residency training program are not eligible for an observership with any UConn School of Medicine sponsored residency/fellowship program whether or not it involves patient care.
