Application Review Process 

We encourage you to apply to our Program in Applied Public Health Sciences. Each applicant is individually and holistically reviewed by our admissions committee so that multiple factors, rather than one single factor, can be considered. As well as your academic record, we place a high value on your experiences working or serving the interests of communities you participate in, together with those unique qualities that could be indispensable to your work as a public health practitioner. We genuinely believe both tangible and intangible factors are essential to success in our public health profession.

Our application process seeks to create globally-minded public health practitioners who are prepared to deal with public health challenges of the twenty-first century. The Program in Applied Public Health Sciences is committed to diversity and the excellence it facilitates. Roughly one-quarter of our students are first-generation, and one-third identify as Black/African American and/or Hispanic.

Application 

For admission, applicants must demonstrate a strong academic record, background and/or experience relevant to public health, well-articulated career goals relevant to public health, and a commitment to the health of the community.  A complete application includes official transcripts, a personal letter of application, and three letters of recommendation (preferably at least one academic letter). Submission of GRE (or MCAT, LSAT, DMAT or GMAT) scores is NOT required for full review of applications.

– Applications submitted before February 15th,will receive full consideration for admission and funding opportunities within the program.

– Applications submitted between February 15 and April 1st, will receive full consideration for admission, but can’t be assured consideration for funding.

– Applications submitted after April 1st  will be considered based on space availability within the program.

For preferred consideration, U.S citizens and permanent residents should apply by April 1 for matriculation in the following fall semester (applications submitted after the 2nd week of July cannot be considered for fall admission). . We do not have a rolling admission. If you are a dual degree or have a very good reason to start in the spring, requests will be reviewed by the committee. International applications (non-U.S citizens or permanent residents) must be submitted by February 1st.

There are two steps in applying:

1. You will need to complete an online application.

The application fee of $75 must be paid with a credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover).

Unofficial Transcripts From Each College or University Attended

Official Transcripts: Request official transcripts from each college or university that you have attended. Official transcripts are issued by the college/university attended and bear the impressed or colored seal of that institution. Compile all your transcripts into your packet and send to the Graduate Admissions Office in Storrs, CT. (address above). Do not open the sealed transcripts you send to the Graduate School. If you are a U.S. Citizen and attended a U.S. college or university, we ask that you wait to submit your official transcripts until you receive notification of admission. International students should request your official transcripts at the time you are applying and send them to the Graduate Admissions Office at Storrs (address above). It is suggested that foreign applicants have their transcript grades evaluated by a credential evaluation service. Unofficial transcripts are only acceptable with the online application.

IMPORTANT: The most common reason for delayed consideration of graduate school applications is missing unofficial transcripts with the online application or missing official transcripts for international applicants.

Three Letters of Recommendation

Letters of Recommendation: Your letters of recommendation will be uploaded to your application by your recommenders (see application for instructions). Three letters of recommendation are required. There is no specific form used for letters of recommendation.

Personal Letter of Application

Personal Letter of Application: Health in the U.S. is marked by inequities in care and disparities in outcomes. Our Program in Applied Public Health Sciences understands that each of us brings unique strengths to our collective, organized effort to resolve these imbalances and improve the public’s health. Describe how your background, education, experience or commitment can contribute to those efforts to improve the well-being of all individuals.

Residence Affidavit

Residence Affidavit: All applicants must complete a residence affidavit for in-state tuition status. Without this document you cannot qualify for in-state tuition rates. You can find the residence affidavit in the online application.

TOEFL Scores (International applicants ONLY)

TOEFL Scores (International Applicants ONLY): Students whose native language is not English must submit English proficiency scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum TOEFL score of 600 (paper) or 250 (computer) is required for admissions. The TOEFL should be taken well in advance of the admission deadlines to assure consideration for the requested admit term. Copies of score reports sent to students are acceptable. The IELTS test is also acceptable. A minimum IELTS score of 7.0 with a speaking minimum of 27 is required. To send your TOEFL scores along with your application, please use institution code 3915; a department code is not necessary.

Official GRE Scores

Official GRE Scores: Submission of Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores are not required.
