Heart Surgery

Working in close collaboration, cardiologists from UConn’s John Dempsey Hospital and other area hospitals offer patients the expertise of one of the most highly experienced groups of cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons in the country. The Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center offers a full spectrum of cardiothoracic and cardiovascular surgical services. Our surgeons have performed hundreds of cardiac and thoracic surgeries using state-of-the-art technology, including complex valve surgeries, reconstruction of the aorta and valve, mitral valve repair and replacement, as well as right-sided valve surgery.

The Calhoun Cardiology Center offers a multidisciplinary team approach to providing surgical care. Cardiothoracic surgeons work closely with their colleagues at the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center as well as other specialists at UConn Health.

Surgical Procedures

UConn’s surgical team includes highly skilled surgeons, cardiologists, nurses and other caregivers who provide excellent care before, during and after surgery.

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting involves grafting a vein from the leg or an artery from the chest or lower arm onto the blocked artery, bypassing the clogged area.

Peripheral Arterial Bypass Surgery involves bypassing the diseased part of an artery. A vein from another part of the body or a synthetic blood vessel is used to restore blood flow to the legs and feet.

Mitral Valve Surgery is offered by an experienced surgical team that corrects all forms of mitral valvular disease, including mitral regurgitation and stenosis.  Treatment options include mitral valve repair and if needed mitral valve replacement from prolapse or previous heart attack or heart failure.

Aortic Valve Surgery is offered for a growing population with age-related aortic stenosis and with congenital two-leaflet aortic valve.  Expertise is offered to treat aortic regurgitation and aortic stenosis, as well as reconstruction of dilated aorta aneurysm.  Timely reconstruction of aorta aneurysm can prevent aorta tearing or leakage.

Other Surgery Services include minimally invasive surgery, specialized epicardial pacemaker implantation, intra-operative ablation for atrial fibrillation using radiofrequency technique, and removal of left atrial appendage which is the source of clot in the heart.
