Leaves, Sabbaticals, Resignations, and Terminations

Leave

Faculty are granted reasonable sick time, at the discretion of the department chair. Prolonged illness in general will require a leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Leaves of absence for other reasons are negotiated through the department chair in consultation with the dean.

Sabbatical Leave

Sabbatical leave is a privilege that is offered to full-time faculty at the rank of assistant professor or above who have continuous full-time service for at least six years. The leave may be granted for the purpose of advancing knowledge or personal improvement that will be mutually beneficial to the University and the individual. The sabbatical leave may or may not be granted based on the educational, research or clinical needs of the institution. Following sabbatical leave, individuals are obligated to return to full-time employment for a minimum of one year. All sabbatical leaves require approval of the department chair, the dean, the provost, and the Board of Directors.

Resignation: Notice Required

Resignations by salaried faculty are governed by the terms set forth in their appointment letters. Generally, six months advance notice is required. Faculty who plan to resign effective July 1 of the calendar year in general must provide written notice by December 31 of the preceding year.

Termination

In-Residence Faculty: Appointments and non-reappointment’s of in-residence faculty are made in accordance with the AAUP bargaining unit agreement, posted on the Faculty Handbook page. See Policy 2001-5 for more information.

Tenure Track Faculty: Notice of non-renewal is made in accordance with the Article XIV.C.5 of the Bylaws of the University of Connecticut.
